                        Position Title: Head of Research Services

                        Location: U.S. Court of Appeals
Library, 2nd Circuit, New York, NY

Salary Range: Class 28 ($56,083 - $91,211)
                                                Promotion Potential to
CL-29 ($66,718 - $108,424)

Position Overview: Head of Research Services supervises and manages all
day-to-day research and reference operations of the US Court of Appeals
Library at Foley Square, New York City. Coordinates circuit-wide research
services: provides traditional and electronic research and instructional
services to court users; develops training programs and materials; trains
court staff on Lexis, Westlaw, the Internet and other online and book
research sources. Markets library services, manages and develops
information tools, e.g., print and electronic newsletter(s), library
research guides, pathfinders and research tools; participates in
production of and content development for Library web site; monitors
availability of electronic and print resources. Responsible for collection
development: evaluates, selects, and requisitions legal and non-legal
library materials for the library. Advises judges with respect to chambers
lawbook collections; works as a team leader in coordinating research
services and collection development among six branch libraries. Oversees
and arranges interlibrary loans, establishes networks with other law
librarians and neighboring libraries to share solutions to difficult
research and other library related issues. Supervises library staff and
reports to the Circuit Librarian or Deputy Circuit Librarian.

Requirements: Masters Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA
accredited institution. Juris Doctor desirable. A minimum of three years
professional law library experience with supervisory responsibilities.
Expert online research skills using Lexis, Westlaw and the Internet.
Practical experience with an Integrated Library System and
OCLC/FirstSearch. Experience teaching the use of the Internet and legal
research online resources. Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet
programs. Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication
skills. Knowledge of information technology and web site development and
maintenance a plus. The successful candidate will be highly motivated,
possess maturity, good judgment, and a strong service orientation. Travel
required.
