The Arthur W. Diamond Law Library of Columbia University invites applications and
nominations for the position of Rare Book Cataloger. This is a temporary position that is
intended to last for one year with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Head of Bibliographic Control (Law Library), the Rare Book Cataloger will
be responsible for:
Performing online original and complex adaptive copy cataloging of rare books,
including classification and subject analysis.
Describing rare books with collation by signatures, pagination, and format.
Performing authority work and database maintenance related to bibliographic
records.
Training staff in the description cataloging of rare books.
Preparing narrative and statistical reports concerning cataloging.
Requirements Are: M.L.S. or equivalent combination of education and experience; knowledge
of and ability to apply AACR2, DCRB/DCRM, LCSH, LC Classification schedules, and other
classification schemes used in the Law Library; knowledge of analytical and descriptive
bibliography, and familiarity with the history of the book and the techniques of book
illustration; knowledge of classical and European languages, especially Latin and German or
French and one other major European language; knowledge of current national trends in
cataloging; knowledge of and ability to work with online bibliographic tools and databases.
This position has been classified as a PC I position. Salary is commensurate with
experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits include assistance with University
