Dear Jay,
My firm has a two tier policy. They will pay complete travel, lodging
and registration costs for the entire library staff (that would be me)
for any professional conference that is held within a ten minute walk of
our office, is scheduled from noon until 1:00 PM, and is completely
free. For conferences which require travel away from the office
vicinage, they have provided me with a pair of ice skates, and as soon
as H*!! freezes over, I 'll be on my way...JUST KIDDING!! (In case my
boss reads this.)
Actually, it's a real issue for a one person library at a smallish firm,
since you wind up with a double hit in the pocketbook - paying my way
plus bringing in a temp who, regardless of how qualified they might be,
inevitably can't provide the level of service demanded. [Requests around
here lean toward the "Bob, I need that book you got me last week
(actually 6 months ago), the blue looseleaf one ( it's really a black
softbound book) written by someone named Smith or Jones (it's actually
Puttsavage) ... Temps tend not to make a return appearance.] So
attendance at such events for me is quite rare and there is no set
policy regarding parameters of reimbursement. If one comes up for which
I can show some compelling reason to attend, we approach it on an ad hoc
basis.
