Law firm offices are getting smaller, and with improving technology,
in-house law libraries and file storage areas have shrunk to a fraction of
their previous size.

Georgia Ferrel, office administrator for the downtown San Diego law firm
of Sullivan Hill Lewin Rez & Engel, said her firm, which recently
renegotiated its lease at 550 West C St., just finished converting what
had been a large library space into two conference rooms, for eight and 10
people respectively, and added a paralegal office.

"Now the library is nine-by-nine ..." Ferrel said. "We don't need a big
library."

Ferrel said her library is able to be so small because most of the source
material Sullivan Hill needs is supplied by Westlaw, an online legal
research service providing access to a collection of statutes, case law
materials, public records, current news articles and business information.
Nelson Ackerly of The Irvine Co., whose firm owns more than a dozen Class
A office buildings scattered around San Diego, has also seen the trend.
"Law firms are recognizing the need for their law libraries to be
something else," Ackerly said.

Ferrel said while there will always be the need for some law books,
attorneys at Sullivan Hill are all trending away from those volumes as
they continue to become more comfortable with online reference materials
and electronic libraries.
