Hi, Jessica,
I'm afraid that I don't know of anything real basic that covers music
and DCMA. In fact, I'm pretty frustrated because I'm supposed to be
guest-editing an issue of "Against the Grain" dealing with licensing
issues, and I haven't been able to find anyone who would commit to
writing about the issues related to streaming music. I think this is a
very important topic, but for some reason no one wants to write about it.
If you or anyone else on LawLib would be interested in taking on this
challenge, I would be ecstatic. I'm looking for an article around July
1. (I'm also still open to other suggestions for articles; if anyone on
law-lib wants to propose a topic, please let me know.)
[Shameless self-promotion follows]
Although not quite what you are looking for, you might find that my book
"The Law of Libraries and Archives," published this year by Scarecrow
Press, provides a good overview of copyright, trademark, and licensing
issues.
As of today, it has been cataloged by 135 libraries on WorldCat,
including a number of major law schools, a couple of law firms, several
state libraries, the American Library Association, BNA's library, the
Supreme Courts of Nevada and Illinois, and the 4th Circuit Court of
Appeals. It has also been cataloged by three universities in Canada, one
in Hong Kong, and one in Singapore.
I want to thank all of you out there in law-lib-land who have purchased
my book. I didn't expect it to be distributed so widely this quickly.
