Hi Byron,
i am not aware of any special form of address in use in Australia. We
Aussies are a great deal less formal about such things than appears
to be the case in the USA. When I was still in practice, I would
frequently simply use the QC's first name, if he/she were someone who
I knew well and dealt with often ( "Dear Nathan", Dear Felicity"
etc.). Or simply, "Dear Mr Smith, "Dear Miss Jones"" and so on. "Dear
Sir" or "Dear Madam" are perfectly acceptable. There is certainly no
requirement to use some special form of address simply because the
addressee happens to hold the rank of QC. By the way, the title of QC
has been abolished in some parts of Australia now, and has been
replaced by "Senior Counsel (SC).
