Sorry but that explanation doesn't fly with me. The monthly
statements from West alert customers that an item was shipped to them so
they know if it is missing. The company's "My Account" on its website
lets us know when a returned item has been received as well as know what
items are in transit. "Past due" means exactly that and not anything
else, i.e., it does not include charges where the 30-day period for
processing payment has not expired.

Subject: RE: Thomson/West Past-Due Notices
Below is the pertinent part of a response from Thomson/West regarding
the past-due notices that we've been receiving [posted with permission
from Thomson/West]. I still believe that these past-due notices are of
no value (see Janet's post below for an example of why) and in fact a
waste of resources, but at least they're telling us what they've changed
and why. Sz

"In an attempt to keep all of our accounts within our net 30 payment
terms our system has been set to start generating payment reminders
anytime a charge becomes just one day outside of these payment terms.
Our first few reminders are more informational and when they are
generated any charges that are open on the account no matter if they
just shipped the day before will appear on the reminder. It provides
billing information so that you can see what you should have received by
now and what items have recently shipped. It allows for any problems
regarding missing shipments, invoices never being received or items you
may have returned but we didn't receive to be resolved sooner rather
than these items becoming so far past due that to solve any problems
would be harder to research to find out the source of these issues."

Well, I just took another look at our most recent "The Following Items
Are Past Due" fax. Half of the items listed have a due date of 2-19-07.
Umm, West-dudes, it's still January!

The easiest way to deal with this major annoyance is take a deep
breath, dump it in the recycle bin, then let your breath out slowly.
Very cathartic!!

They must be. I've just received my MDF (Monthly Dunning Fax)
for our outrageous Past Due Balance. (If you don't have audio, please
imagine a sinister organ chord at this point.) Apparently they need our
meagre pittance to maintain cashflow. The fax is dated today, 1/29/07.
The oldest item on the Past Due Balance (Sinister Organ Chord) is dated
--- 1/28/07. That would be yesterday. Y'know, Sunday. Come on, West,
even assuming you haven't actually already received our check, which was
mailed last Thursday, don't we at least get an extra day since there is
no *#^%ing mail delivery on Sunday? And, as usual, only about half of
the items listed are an actual the
Oh-My-God-These-People-Are-Bums-Who-Will-Never-Pay twenty four hours
Past Due Balance (S.O.C.) The rest aren't due yet. (Oops, I lie, one is
due today. I'll pry the gold filling out of my molar and courier it to
Eagan at once.)
Anyway, West, sorry to see you're in such straitened
circumstances. I'm organizing a fundraiser. After all, nobody needs
charity more than a multi-billion dollar international conglomerate with
a lock on half the legal publishing in the Unites States. Meanwhile,
maybe if you stopped wasting your money (And my time. And in the end,
also my money, come to think of it.) sending out idiotic computer
generated faxes, you'd have a little cash left over at the end of the
month and not have to search under the sofa cushions for loose change.
