National Reporter Blue Books

Why are they colored and called Blue Books?

Does anyone know the answer to this piece of triva?

I've searched Hein Online, which includes the Law Library Journal
Questions and Answers and several old legal researh texts. Also checked
customer service and other pages on Thomson West.
