[Posted to LLSDC and Law-Lib listservs]
Dear LLSDC members and other law library colleagues --
I'm pleased to announce that the newest electronic issue of Law Library
Lights is now available. You can link directly to the issue at
http://www.llsdc.org/lights/pdf/50_2.pdf
The theme of the Winter 2007 issue is A Day in the Life of a Law
Librarian. Contributions come from academic law school librarians,
private law firm librarians, special librarians, library relations
consultants, an interlibrary loan specialist, and a current
MLS/JD-degree candidate. The articles reflect the variety of
opportunities available in the law library profession, all of which are
filled with rewards, challenges, and a sense of fulfillment.
Please forward this e-mail to any of your colleagues who are not on the
LLSDC or Law-Lib listservs. Also, I'm happy to add e-mail addresses to
a distribution list for those who are not on the LLSDC listserv or who
would like separate notification for whatever reason. Just send me an
e-mail at dbohls@cov.com.
I hope that we can use this issue as a recruiting tool for our
profession; feel free to distribute this e-mail and/or the Lights issue
as widely as possible, especially to any MLS students or prospective MLS
students you might know.
Here's a summary of our feature articles:
"The Very Busy Life of a Joint Degree Student"
Alison A. Shea, JD/MLS student, Catholic University of America
What's life life for someone who's not only simultaneously working on
her JD and MLS degrees, but also trying to accumulate that indispensible
library work experience? Well, it's very busy to say the least, but
Alison handles her daily maze of classes and part-time jobs with poise
and humor.
"From Electronic Resources to Librarian Relations: Making the Switch"
Cindy Carlson, Librarian Relations Manager, Thomson West
Cindy Carlson joined Thomson West from a private law firm, so she's
well-versed in the pros and cons of each. Highly-developed time
management, organizational, and people skills are even more of a
priority in her new job, but the trade offs include greater interaction
with colleagues and more time with family.
"Which Hat Will I Wear Today?"
Leanne B. Battle, LexisNexis, Senior Librarian Relations Consultant
Librarians wear many "hats" in meeting their daily challenges, but
Leanne has more hats than most of us! Read about the variety of
responsibilities "worn" by a LexisNexis consultant, from keeping up with
the very latest lexis.com developments to making presentations to
designing this year's holiday party invitation.
"A Day in the Life of the Covington & Burling LLP Reference Desk"
Elizabeth LeDoux and Dawn Bohls, Senior Research Librarians, Covington &
Burling LLP
I had so much fun working on this issue that I couldn't resist helping
my colleague Elizabeth LeDoux write an article about our own jobs.
Learn what it's like to work at a busy reference desk that's right in
the middle of everything.
"The World Bank Law Library: A Truly Global Experience"
Laura Lalime-Mowry and Olesya Zaremba, Information Analysts, World Bank
Law Library
The World Bank Law Library specializes in international legal research.
Laura Lalime-Mowry and Olesya Zaremba assist World Bank personnel
worldwide in finding the materials they need to do their jobs. For
Laura and Olesya, requests for the obscure are the norm.
"Life as a Solo Librarian: Master of My Domain"
Louis Abramovitz, Librarian, Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP
The solo librarian must truly function as a jack-of-all trades. Louis
Abramovitz can spend a "typical" day doing everything from handling
research requests to notarizing documents to processing the mail to
bribing people into the Library with green bagels (for St. Patrick's
Day).
"ILL: A Look Behind the Scenes"
Steven Shearer, ILL Specialist, Steptoe & Johnson
If you've ever failed to appreciate your interlibrary loan librarian or
specialist, you won't make that mistake after reading this article. ILL
specialists have the unique responsibility of finding the unfindable --
somehow obtaining that one document upon which a case may be one or
lost. Of course, there are also those requests for hundreds of
scientific articles that your attorneys may or may not ever look at....
"Life in an Academic Law Library"
Christine Ciambella, Access & Research Services Librarian, George Mason
University School of Law Library
Christine Ciambella supervises the Access Services function at George
Mason's Law Library. She's responsible for making sure that the
circulation desk is staffed, the collection is maintained, the reserves
are compiled, and the law students are made to feel welcome.
Coordinating all these responsibilities is a balancing act, requiring a
willingness to be both proactive to avoid problems as well as reactive
to address those issues that do arise.
"I Can Do the Job: The Hiring, Training, and Daily Duties of a Library
Clerk with Cognitive Disabilities"
Edward O'Rourke, Manager of Library Services, Baker Botts LLP
I have to especially thank Edward O'Rourke, Manager of Library Services
at Baker Botts LLP, for contributing this article. Edward reminds us
that law libraries aren't just about MLS degrees, high-level research,
and collection management. Libraries exist to serve our patrons. Baker
Botts LLP has a special program that hires persons with cognitive
disabilities to work in the its Library. In serving our patrons, a
positive attitude and attention to detail are essential skills for all
us.
In addition to all these great articles, the Winter 2007 issue of Lights
includes columns by LLSDC President Billie Jo Kaufman, Roger Skalbeck,
and Susan Chinoransky; a new book review column by Karen Silber; and the
latest member news from Amy Taylor.
I hope you enjoy the issue and the convenience of the new PDF format.
Please e-mail me with your comments and suggestions for improvement.
Also, we've got another issue coming up soon -- Researching Special
Areas -- so I'll be putting out a call for papers soon. Consider making
a contribution to Lights this year. A list of the topics for upcoming
issues is available on the new LLSDC Lights page:
