Thanks to everyone who responded. regarding whether or not they were
keeping the Federal Jury Practice & Instructions Companion Handbook. I
have indicated comments below without names but identifying the type of
library if given. I've decided NOT to keep it since I believe it will
only mushroom in expense and looks like there is a trend toward doing
the same thing for every possible publication in order to garner more
revenue for West.
1.) I am curious about the response you got to this. Today I received a
Missouri Jury Instruction Companion Volume (cost $85.00)

2.) At this point I'm keeping it, but I'll cancel it later if it turns
out nobody ever uses it.

3.) Sending it back. Even if it has something D&B doesn't, I object to
the practice they are employing.
4.) I would be interested in what you find out. I have one of our
attorneys reviewing our copy to see if we want it.
a firm librarian
5.) Please let me know what responses you get. We received 17 as we
have 17 copies of Devitt and Blackmar and I don't think we will need to
keep more than a couple, if any. Thanks!

6.) I haven't seen this "companion handbook" yet, but I just cataloged a
similar title that is designed to work with the Missouri Approved Jury
Instructions. This state specific title is useful, but it should have
been incorporated into the next edition of the instructions. However,
that would not have enhanced Thomson's revenues as well.

7.) Please let me know your responses. I kept it for at least one
issue, but only because the people that could assist in my decision are
busy at trial or were out of the office when it came in.

8.) We opted to keep it.

9.) We are keeping it.

10.) I checked this companion volume with one of our federal litigating
attorneys and she liked it and wanted to keep it--without hesitation.
She said they are always running into odd jury instructions and thought
the volume would be helpful.

11.) We sent it back. In this time of cutting to the bone, I decided we
could live without it.
Thanks again for everyone's response.

Subject: Federal Jury Practice & Instructions Companion Handbook
As subscribers to Federal Jury Practice & Instructions (I still call it
Devitt and Blackmar) we have received a companion work entitled Federal
Jury Practice & Instructions Companion Handbook (paperback, at a cost of
$74.90). Its accompanying paperwork says it provides entire jury
charges that have actually been used by federal judges at trial, each
set of real-case instructions prefaced with the facts giving rise to the
case, an overview of the legal elements and applicable cross references.
I'd be interested to know the assessment other librarians have made in
regard to this volume. I am undecided about retaining it for our firm's
library. (West actually sent a postage free return label and
acknowledged it was a "companion work." It appears since this volume is
marked 2006-2007 Edition, it may become an annual expense.) Are list
members keeping it or sending it back?
