Public Services/Reference position

The Tarlton Law Library at the University of Texas at Austin School of
Law is seeking a candidate for a public services/reference position.

The Tarlton Law Library serves the faculty and students of one of the
nation's top public law schools, as well as the broader University
community. The library houses one of the largest legal collections in
the country in a spacious facility of six floors. The law library is
located in Austin, Texas, a city consistently ranked as one of America's
best places to live.

Responsibilities: Members of our public services team provide a wide
variety of services to the law school community. Specific duties
include:

* Working with individual law faculty through our "liaison"
program, which pairs librarians with members of the faculty. Service to
faculty includes research assistance, document delivery support and
current awareness services.
* Providing reference service to faculty, students, staff,
university students, the local bar and the general public at the library
reference desk. Such service is provided through in-person interviews,
the telephone and internet chat.
* Preparing bibliographies and research guides as requested.
* Providing recommendations on collection development, in both
print and online formats.
* Participating in outreach activities, such as blue book citation
training, to law student organizations.

Teaching is an important part of our mission. Public services
librarians may be called on to teach in a variety of settings:

* a one-hour legal research elective class to first-year law
students.
* a one-hour advanced legal research class to upper-level law
students.
* course offerings through the University's School of Information
as part of that school's law librarian specialization.
* lectures presented to undergraduate or graduate level students
whose coursework requires that they utilize the law library collection.
* Lectures for individual law classes, as requested by faculty.

Requirements: Applicants should be energetic, service-oriented and
anxious to take on responsibility. The candidate for this position must
have a J.D. degree and a degree in library or information science from
accredited institutions. This position will require some evening and
weekend reference duties, which will be open to negotiation. Recent
(and soon-to-be) graduates of library and information science programs
are encouraged to apply, as well as experienced law librarians.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, current resume, three
letters of reference and transcripts from universities attended. All
material should be sent to Jeanne Price, Director of Patron Services,
Tarlton Law Library, University of Texas, 727 E. Dean Keeton Street,
Austin, TX 78705.
