The new 2006 bound edition arrived in our library today. Including
both
Federal Reporter and Federal Supplement citations, it totals 38
volumes
and costs just under $7500.
My question to the list is: How many law school libraries intend to
keep and continue the Shepard's set in print? I will summarize for
the
list.
Replies:
A few weeks ago we cancelled and discarded everything but the NY
Shepard's in print.
We just cancelled it a few months ago.
We cancelled all but a few Shepard's titles this spring. We have a
subscription to KeyCite for public patrons, which I think is
considerably
better anyway. Our first year legal research & writing profs wanted
some active subscriptions for teaching purposes, so we kept Federal,
Connecticut, Atlantic, and Northeastern. But I didn't realize we'd be
getting a $7,500 hit on Federal -- I don't think it's worth it,
especially
given LexisNexis' recent decision to discontinue tracking of West
headnote
numbers.
Here at U. of X we are only keeping the Ohio Shepard's in print.
We have Westlaw public access for the public users and keep old print
Shepard's for the occasional paralegal class or even legal research
and
writing class that wants to show the paper version.
I'll be interested in the summary.
We intend to cancel.
We will not be keeping.
At the University of X we discontinued all Shepards in print
except for our state (Tenn.) Shepards a few years back. We provide
KeyCite via WestPac for our attorney and general public patrons. While
we have had a couple of complaints, mostly from attorneys who like
their
familiar Shepards, we have saved a lot of money and feel like we are
providing a superior service to our patrons, since the online is so
much
more up to date.
We cancelled our subscription for these a few years ago. In fact we
don't get any Shepards citations any more, not even for Oregon.
We cancelled quite some time ago.
We are keeping the set at X - not my idea -I'll look forward to your
summary.
We have cancelled our print Shepard's, and started phasing out
gradually since 2000 with all federal and most state Shepard's.
We plan to keep and continue the set in print.
