I enjoy my regional chapter meetings so much that I occasional check
out other chapter meetings. Hence, I recently returned from the 2006
WestPac Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Despite being
an "outsider," I had a great time. I learned a lot of great material,
meet lots of wonderful people, and renewed friendships with colleagues
I met during the AALL Annual Meetings. Thank you to WestPac attendees
for making me feel at home!
Sunday
I attended HeinOnline's program and enjoyed seeing what was coming
down the pipeline as well as their plans for the future. The tour of
the Wiener-Rogers Law Library made me a little jealous. It was a
beautiful facility with lots of room for growth. The reception was
loaded with lots of stuffed mushrooms and a roast of beef cut right in
front of attendees. I sat by a couple of county law librarians and
learned a lot about their profession. We also had a suprise visit by
Elvis. He gave a special performance of a modified version of
Heartbreak Hotel. The King, actually the King of King County,
Washington, was magnificence!
Monday
The five law librarians in the "Western Legal History 101:
Prestatehood Legal Materials" program were very informative. It was
obvious they enjoyed being involved with the project. "Games We Don’t
Want To Play: Negotiating" provided lots of basic information on
electronic resources. While I am highly familiar with this area of
collection development, I appreciated getting the point of view of a
law firm librarian and a consortium director. The "Lawyer in the
Library" is a unique program held once a week at a county law library
where local attorneys provide legal information on specific topics to
pro se patrons. http://washoecounty.us/lawlib
In "Gaming the System," a talk show host, um, I mean law librarian
provided a demonstration of a Classroom Performance System (CPS). He
made it especially fun with the prizes he handed out.
Tuesday
The "Web-based Legal Research Instruction" program provided me with
lots of ideas to try in my classes. What made this extra special was
hearing about all the different uses. In addition to law librarians
teaching law students, I learned about uses by law firms, West Library
Relations, county law librarians, and law librarians teaching
university classes outside of the law school. The "Sex Industry in
Nevada" answered many questions I had but was afraid to ask. Too say
this program was interesting is an understatement.
Invitation to all!!!
Last but not least, I want to invite WestPac members and other law
librarians to attend the 2006 MAALL Annual Meeting in Tulsa on October
19-21. http://www.law.utulsa.edu/library/maall
If the swimming pool photos of law librarians showing a little leg at
http://www.law.utulsa.edu/library/maall/photos/hotel do not tempt you,
perhaps the low $65 conference hotel rate will. Be forewarned when
looking at photos because the sauna photo is especially hot!
