here are responses that I received re my lawlib posting for this series:

I think that they are great. I use them myself quite frequently. I find that they are a good way to familiarize your self with various practice areas. I would recommend purchasing them. I have a set (well not all of them - but a pretty good representation) in a "new lawyer section" in our library.

I can't talk about the law firm environment but in the academic environment this series is a great tool. I used it as a law student, got a lot of benefit from it, and I recommend it to all the students here. I have gotten some very positive feed back from our students on it.

We collect select titles as study aids for our law students. I'm not

sure how useful they'd be for actual attorneys.

It's something I've always had on Reserve at Law School Libraries. I can't believe it is substantive enough for the firm. I used some as backups in my law school classes. I equate them to West's Blackletter series - maybe a bit better, but not a lot.

Yes, we have also found them quite helpful. I have been reading through the Understanding Insurance after using it for a research question because found it quite clear.

We purchased a couple of them specifically for new attorneys who wanted a basic treatise/overview of a topic. The attorneys were happy and thought they served that purpose well. Thanks.

The Lexis, originally Matthew Bender, series Understanding the Law was one I first encountered as the Senior Reference Librarian, in the mid-1990's, at the Orange County Law Library. Then, as now, I remain strongly supportive of this series. Basically, they as more detailed that West's Nutshell titles as regards depth of coverage. Perhaps more important, the Understanding the Law volumes are more practice orientated and thus I have found them of particular value for attorneys groping to understand an unfamiliar area of the law.
