The Washington, DC office of Dewey Ballantine LLP is seeking qualified
applicants for the position of Assistant Librarian. The position is opening
up in the Fall of 2006.

The primary responsibilities of this position are twofold.

1. Second in charge of this law firm branch library. Reports to the
Library Manager of the DC office. Responsibilities include but are not
limited to: assisting with library staffing and personnel issues, providing
comparative assessments of databases, services, and research tools and
techniques, suggesting possible new acquisitions, assisting with library
orientation for new legal staff hires, and handling library matters in the
absence of the Library Manager.

2. Head of the 3 person Reference team, consisting of the Assistant
Librarian, Reference Librarian, and Inter-Library Loan Librarian.
Responsibilities include managing the workload of the Reference team,
managing the Reference Desk schedule, delegating assignments, and managing
the training and development of the Reference staff. Duties also include
creating pathfinders, information memos and training manuals, and handling
both simple and complex research queries on a variety of wide-ranging
topics and practice areas.

Required:

· M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. from an A.L.A. accredited program.
· At least 5 years reference experience in a business or legal library.
· Proficiency searching the following databases: DIALOG, LexisNexis,
Westlaw, Factiva, D&B, GSI, LivEdgar, Micropat, Courtlink, PACER,
CourtExpress, and other similar resources used in law and business
libraries. Must be able to quickly evaluate which database(s) best
answers the specific patron query in the most cost-effective and
time-efficient manner. Must have experience providing company and industry
intelligence using online services and the Internet.
· Expertise with the Microsoft Suite: Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
Familiarity with OCLC for inter-library loan.
· Excellent oral and written communication and reporting skills, with a
high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
· Strong interpersonal skills that demonstrate collaboration and
teamwork. The ability to distribute daily workload between three Reference
team members. The ability to prioritize requests and equitably assign
tasks among the team.
· Confident and friendly customer service attitude at all times. A
can-do approach to life, combined with a strong work ethic. Willingness to
embrace change, and use the opportunity it offers to grow and develop
personal knowledge base and expertise in new areas.

Desired:

· Experience training others to use both print and electronic
resources. Classroom training skills, using power point presentations.
Although reliance is on vendor provided training whenever possible, this
position does require some classroom style teaching, as well as one-on-one
patron training.
· Supervisory experience, particularly supervising reference staff, or
the willingness to develop this expertise.
· Undergraduate or post-graduate degree in business, law, political
science, or electronic engineering highly desirable.
