Greetings all
I am still working on a program on communication between technical
services/cataloging staff & reference/public services staff (any and all
ideas appreciated). Specifically now I am thinking about the ways in
which reference librarians search the OPAC. In general, we search by
keyword or subject, and if we get too many results (which is very often
the case), or if we want to hone in on the most recent, most relevant
stuff we limit by year. There is, alas, a major flaw in this method. If,
for example, I am looking for titles on Bioethics - perhaps I'll do an
advanced keyword search for "Bioethics." In our catalog I get 90 records.
To pare this down a bit I limit by date - say I want only those things
published after 2000 - now I get only 36, most of them pretty relevant.
Hooray for me, except for the fact that I miss "BioLaw," which is a
looseleaf reporter on bioethics and the law, a great resource that covers
much of what I'm interested in, updated monthly, but published in 1986.
"Limit by titles published after 2000" misses this, So....
How do I get the "Limit by..." or Modify function to look at the date of
the most recent release? I posed this question several years ago & someone
out there suggested a second imprint with the updated date, so that a
"limit by year" type function would pick this up.
Any ideas?
Many thanks,
