The D’Angelo Law Library seeks candidates for the position of Reference
Librarian. The D’Angelo Law Library primarily serves the faculty, staff
and students of one of the nation’s premier law schools and is
affiliated with the University of Chicago Library, one of the finest
research collections in the world, with unparalleled print and
electronic collections. The D’Angelo Law Library is engaged in an
innovative renovation project culminating in new spaces for collections,
services, study, and staff in 2007. In addition, the D’Angelo Law
Library is participating in a project to construct an on-campus high
density storage facility. Under the supervision of the Associate Law
Librarian for Public Services, the Reference Librarian works in a
challenging, collegial environment with a long tradition of excellent
reference service and with a tremendous breadth of collections and

Responsibilities: The Reference Librarian works as part of a public
services team to provide outstanding research services to the law school
and university communities. Participates in a rotating reference desk
schedule. Collaborates on the legal research curriculum for law students
and students in other campus programs. Participates in basic legal
research training for law students, teaches other research classes, and
gives tours and orientation sessions. Serves in a lead role in
developing and participating in outreach activities to law students and
law school student organizations. Interacts, and serves as a contact
with, vendor representatives to ensure the availability and
functionality of electronic resources and to keep apprised of new
developments. Successfully applies new information technologies to
services and outreach. The Reference Librarian collaborates with
University colleagues on Library-wide initiatives and projects. For

Qualifications: Masters degree from an ALA accredited library school, JD
from an ABA accredited law school; experience with legal research
materials, techniques and strategies; substantial knowledge of WESTLAW,
LexisNexis, web-based subscription services and Internet resources;
knowledge of HTML and web-authoring tools; experience with creating and
maintaining web pages; experience using library computer applications
and desktop Windows software; excellent interpersonal, written and oral
communication skills; strong organizational and planning skills; ability
to establish and maintain a good working relationship with colleagues
and work effectively in a team-oriented environment.; strong public
service philosophy and a commitment to continuous improvement and
innovation are all required.
Previous experience working in a law library; teaching or training
experience; knowledge of one or more foreign languages; familiarity with
Blackboard or other course management software; experience with desktop
publishing; experience with database design using Microsoft Access; and
an interest in and familiarity with internet-based communication tools
such as blogs, wikis, instant messaging, RSS are preferred
skills/experience.
Salary and Benefits: Appointment salary will be based on qualifications
and experience. Benefits include a contributory retirement plan, health
and life insurance, paid time off including vacation, University
holidays, personal holidays, and sick leave. There is a tuition benefit
plan for college-age and younger children.
