I have received a number of comments disputing my reference to the term censorship in my previous note. I believe that these commenters are correct, to the extent that a more apt word would have been BOYCOTT as an organized campaign not to purchase items from a particular company.
The reason I used the phrase -- smacks of censorship -- is that librarians purchase materials on behalf of their patrons and thus may have some heightened duties. But I think I carried the analogy too far and of course censorship is a hot button word in today's climate.
However, I stand by my thoughts that a full and open discussion of concerns involving West pricing policies would be much more effective a tool of persuasion than a boycott of West products or services or marketing events.
Thank you for the thoughtful feedback and I stand corrected on that point.
