Thank you to T.R. from Montana, Jan Bissett, Kelly Devlin, Paula
Lichtenberg, and Donna Cavallini for their suggestions.
Donna referred me to an earlier email in the archives at
http://lawlibrary.ucdavis.edu/LAWLIB/April03/0442.html. I'll
re-summarize her email, since some of the URLs have changed. Donna's
email stated that:
"Recommended strategies included searching for news articles which might
mention a deal and searching SEC EX 10 filings (for which Lexis.com's IP
practice area page have a link with a preformulated query), although
this will only work if the company in question is public or if the
company with which they are contracting is public and considers the deal
to be of sufficiently material nature to require filing (and even then,
most companies will request confidential status for the document)."
Donna also mentioned IPLX, which has since changed its name to IPDOX
(http://www.ipdox.com/), and MicroPatent, which is now found at
http://www.micropat.com/.
In addition to Donna's response, I received suggestions for
PatentValuePredictor.com (http://www.patentvaluepredictor.com), the book
"Licensing Royalty Rates" (Aspen Publishers, annual), royaltystat
(http://www.royaltystat.com/), royaltysource (http://www.royaltysource.com/)
Another librarian said that she googled "value of a patent" and found
several articles in legal journals.
I'm going to send this information to the IP lawyers at the Louisville
Bar Association, and I suspect that they will be very impressed with the
collective wisdom of this list. I know that I always am.
