The information below is presented in the next TSLL newsletter in the
Preservation Column. Since TSLL will probably not appear in time for
non-SEAALL members to take advantage, I am forwarding it. Please pardon
duplication.

The SEAALL Institute this year is top-notch! Register for it!

Hurricanes, floods, computer failures, fires, and all sorts of disasters
man-made or otherwise will be confronted in this program. (How can you
miss that kind of excitement?)

Law libraries have special missions to provide continuing service in the
face of disasters, and we rarely have the opportunity to focus on how
law libraries should perform risk assessment, disaster preparedness and
disaster recovery. This is your chance!

You'll bring back:
- strategies for determining your library's top risks,
- top ten lists for preparedness and recovery,
- contacts for recovery services,
- sample disaster preparedness plans from other law libraries, and
- contacts for colleagues with experience with planning and recovery.

Take a look at the experts Nancy Johnson has assembled and Thomson West
has underwritten for this Institute:

Jeanne Drewes, Assistant Director for Access and Preservation at
Michigan State University Libraries, (http://www.lib.msu.edu/drewes/) is
one of the authors of the 2005 A.L.A. book Risk and Insurance Management
for Libraries. Jeanne will cover risk assessment for law libraries,
since we must start with a look at likelihood of the various threats and
the costs of prevention and recovery.

Lori Beam, Director of IT at Smith Anderson in Raleigh, joins Ken Hirsh,
Director of Computing Services at Duke University School of Law, for a
focus on disaster preparedness, particularly data protection. Lori and
Ken have experience in both preparedness and recovery and will make us
the beneficiaries of their knowledge. For more information about Lori
see http://www.smithlaw.com/page.cfm?pn=ls&spn=mgt&staffid=7, and see
http://www.law.duke.edu/fac/hirsh/index.html for more information about
Ken.

John Schultz, Professor of Law and former Director of the Law Library at
the University of Houston, will share his expertise on disaster
recovery. Some of you may recall the flooding of the University of
Houston Law Library a few years ago. John learned first hand about
major disaster recovery and has become a regular speaker on the topic.
See his webpage for the "Master of Disaster" at
http://www.themasterofdisaster.com/author.html.

Finally, Carol Billings, Director of the Law Library of Louisiana in New
Orleans, will moderate a panel of law librarians who faced hurricanes
this past year. She'll be joined by Elizabeth Cavandish, Librarian at
Adams and Reese in New Orleans, Georgia Chadwick, Documents and
Collection Development Librarian, the Law Library of Louisiana, and
Sally Wise, Director of the Law Library, University of Miami.

So, make the most of this opportunity, and register for the SEAALL
Institute! For the full Institute schedule and registration details see
http://www.aallnet.org/chapter/seaall/meeting/2006/institute.htm.
