The University of San Francisco School of Law invites applications,
expressions of interest and nominations for the position of Director
of the Dorraine Zief Law Library.
  The University of San Francisco is recognized nationally and
internationally as a premier Jesuit, Catholic, urban university with

justice. The Dorraine Zief Law Library supports the research needs of
the students, faculty, and alumni of The University of San Francisco
School of Law, as well as members of the California Bar Association.

The Dorraine Zief Law Library is a modern, technologically advanced
three story building featuring a comfortable, flexible, fully
accessible research and study environment fully equipped with the
latest technological infrastructure. Opened in 2000, the Zief Library
has been widely praised as one of the best and most beautiful law
libraries in the country. The library has a full-time staff of 13,
including 6 professionals and 7 support staff. Full-time reference
librarians hold both a law degree and a library science degree. The
collection is housed in a three-story, 60,000 square foot building
with 394 seats and 7 group study rooms. The Library currently
contains over 180,000 print, digital, and microform titles, in more
than 350,000 volumes - including the equivalent of 207,000 volumes in
microform.

Founded in 1912, the law school is fully accredited by the ABA and is
a member of the AALS. The law school offers both a J.D. degree and a
concurrent degree program leading to JD and MBA. degrees. USF also
offers LL.M degrees in International and Comparative Law as well as
in Intellectual Property and Technology Law.

The University of San Francisco School of Law's Koret Law Center
includes the Dorraine Zief Law Library and Kendrick Hall. It is
located on the 55-acre hilltop USF campus adjacent to Golden Gate
Park and overlooking the Pacific Ocean and downtown San Francisco.

Responsibilities:

The Director of the Law Library reports to the Dean. The Director's
primary responsibility is management of a research oriented law
library with an emphasis on user-focused services. In particular, the
Director is responsible for successfully overseeing all aspects of
library operation and administration, including: hiring, training and
supervising library staff; collection development; budgeting;
technology development and implementation; strategic planning; and
fostering effective working relationships with law school and
University colleagues. The Director also monitors the programs and
services of the library, and ensures that they are sufficient to meet
the needs of students, faculty, and alumni. The Director is
responsible for ensuring that the library meets the accreditation
standards of the American Bar Association and the membership
requirements of the Association of American Law Schools. The Law
School encourages participation in the American Association of Law
Libraries and other law library organizations, and publication of
library-related scholarship.

In addition to the administrative appointment as Director, the
successful candidate will also be appointed to the faculty. The
faculty appointment may be either tenure-track or non-tenure-track,
depending on the successful candidate's interests, qualifications,
and preferences. As Director and as a member of the faculty, the
Director will actively participate in the intellectual life of the
law school, engaging in scholarly activities and teaching as needed
and as time permits.

Required:

Applicants must have a JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school,
an MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program. The successful
candidate should have substantial, recent managerial experience in
law library administration, preferably at an academic law library.
She or he should also demonstrate effective supervisory experience,
an ability to work well with a diverse employee and user community,
and to work within a collegial environment. The successful candidate
must have a strong commitment to support faculty and student research
and scholarship.
