Without attempting to beat this issue to its ugly death...
I most certainly did not mean to be ad hominem with my remarks, and most
especially as to my closing which is what seems to have set off Kevin... I was
responding to another post...obviously, I thought in a humorous vein...others
might not see it that way ( I guess Mr. Bush is not, as he said he was "I am
a uniter not a divider") as we do seem more polarized and divided than ever
as Americans...
Most unfortunately Mr. Bush and the White House have set off to make this
political by the very choice they made, as opposed to picking what one could
characterize as a normal judicial choice for the US Supreme court..again this is
the U.S. SUPREME court not a federal district court or other court or
political appointments (where cronyism can prevail as common practice)... thus, one
would hope that our constitutional freedom as to free speech would still be
alive and well to question (and I most certainly hope the full Judiciary of
the US Senate, Republicans and Democrats alike will Question the nominee in a
robust and fair way) this choice on this list serv!
I still hold true that Mr. Bush sort of went into the Music Man mode trying
to convince the public (especially and what I wrote about, the Rose Garden
News Conference)of the fact that his choice was the MOST qualified person he
could find in all the land...and it is fact he did at one point look into a pair
of binoculars from the wrong end as the photo was printed in
newspapers..ergo the blowing in the wrong end of the instrument...and most would agree he
has been off in his public commentary sorta like he is off script as Mr. Rove
seems otherwise occupied by grand jury testimony and other criminal matters in
the leadership...this is fact too....it just seems that this important
nomination which came on the very same day the newly appointed Judge Roberts took
the helm of the US SUPREME COURT is most dubious as to both the day it was
announced as if the public would be looking at the Opening Day of the US
SUPREME COURT and its new CHIEF as opposed to his nominating Harriet Miers...boy o
boy was Mr Bush wrong as to the timing....and why would Mr. Bush want to
upstage Mr. Roberts first day on the job (at least publicly) the first Monday of
October!
Now it's reported in the papers (Today's Newsday @ page 21! "ALLEGED ROVE
SECRET RILES SENATORS") that Mr. Rove had spoken to several evangelicals
"Senators yesterday demanded disclosure of the secret that top Bush aide Karl Rove
told a conservative activist last week to reassure him about Supreme Court
nominee Harriet Miers, but but the White House insisted there is no secret to
divulge. Many politicians and activists reacted with surprise last week when
conservative Focus on the Family founder James Dobson announced his support for
Ms. Miers and said on his radio show Wednesday THAT ROVE TOLD HIM THINGS
ABOUT MS. MIERS "I PROBABLY SHOULD' NT KNOW." Three senators Sen Arlen Specter,
Sen Patrck Leahy and Sen Charles Schumer said yesterday on morning talk
shows that Meirs confirmation could be derailed if there were what Specter called
"ANY BACKROOM DEALS" on her votes on abortion or other issues that come
before the SUPREME court."
A lot of serious, most serious questions remain as to the character of those
who placed her name in nomination and if, in any way her future judicial
integrity can be so easily compromised.
Hopefully a full and robust questioning will take place and certainly we as
citizens should be free to communicate our expression as to this most
important issue that will have an impact on all our lives both professionally and
personally.
I don't know how to close this time..., maybe pleading my first amendments
rights...and yours too...as we all have and need the right to speak our
minds...after all, was it not Vice President Dan Qualye (sp?)(how soon we
forget)(and who now seems like a magna Cum Laude) who said "a mind is a terrible thing
to lose"?
A GREAT evening to all,
Marty Gofberg

Not wanting to beat this discussion to death (honestly), but I think it's
off-the-mark to label comments in this string "ad hominem." When an
individual (his character, his conduct, etc.) is the focus of an issue, it's not ad
hominem to address character, personality and other personal traits that might,
in another context, justify the ad-hominem label..
The Miers nomination does raise as many questions about Bush's character as
it raises about hers. It's not unreasonable to judge that between the two,
Bush's character is the more important focus at the moment. It will likely
remain so until he has been put to pasture in Crawford. [oops, I didn't intend
to politicize this]

A series of ad hominem attacks…and he dares to close with “cheers…& peace
be with ya”?
An Incongruous, and probably not sincere complimentary closing line.
Hey, let’s not turn this in to a political discussion, eh? The quality of
discourse has been lacking of late. I remember the old days here. Let’s
return to that, shall we?

Obviously she limits her contact to very small circles of men that she has
met...we need much more than a big band as mr bush would have been better
served wearing a Tuba when he made the announcement...sorta like the broadway
play the music man with him confusing instruments as usual...or blowing on the
wrong end of them....seems he has been allowed to be off script a lot lately
as his inner circle faces criminal inquiries and knee surgery or are just
plain out to vacation (or lunch)... and rumors also have it that he is hitting
the bottle again....guess he needs to beware of not attempting to eat
pretzels at the same time, we all know what happened last time...or do we???
cheers.....& peace be with ya....

Can any USA Law-Libber vouch for the accuracy of reports we are
getting in our daily press here in Australia that Harriet Miers has
described George W. Bush
as "the most brilliant man (she) has ever met".
If these reports are true, and if the good lady truly believes that
assertion, ought not a big band be playing, "Don't Get Around Much
Anymore" as her theme tune ?
Just my two cents worth : - )
