Prof. Huttner -
On the whole, I agree with you. However, there have been a
couple of statements in this thread that are, as Kevin
noted, little more than personal attacks on President Bush.
Although as a political matter I think there are very few
negative comments about President Bush that are not
warranted, the proper venue for such comments is a political
blog such as dailykos.com. Comments on this list about
President Bush risk turning the list into a political blog,
which will result in our conservative/Republican colleagues
not taking part. I think that would diminish the value of
the list, which after all is for law librarians to exchange
information to help each of us do better at our jobs.
You are absolutely correct that the subject of a Supreme
Court nomination is a relevant and appropriate discussion
for this list, and I think the exposition of varying
opinions as to the qualifications of the nominee is
appropriate, useful, and interesting. I think it is
inappropriate when we move from a discussion of the
nominee's qualifications to a discussion of the
qualifications of the person who nominated her, and I think
that has been the root of the objections to this discussion.
just my nickel . . .
