Dave Rogers (I think at Sidley Austin in Chicago - his e-mail is just
Dave_the-Librarian. Like Cher or Prince.) His answer:
Seven Branches of the US Military:
Public Health Service (the Surgeon General wears a uniform for a
reason!) (10 USC 101)
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( Commissioned Officer
Corps - all 299 of them. 33 USC 3001)
Coast Guard
Air Force
Army
Marine Corps
Navy
The Air Force, Army, Navy & Marines are specifically "armed services"
(10 USC 101). Public Health and Coast Guard are "uniformed services" (10
US 101) and NOAA ditto by reference (33 USC 3001). They're all military
because of their command structure.
There, I've now blown a trivia question that's won me a lot of free
drinks over the years.
