On behalf of the SLA CI Division, I'm posting information about
pre-conference workshops at SLA in Toronto and would like to especially
encourage local folks to attend. You do not need to be an SLA member to
enroll, see below.

Of related interest, may be a recent article in the National Law Journal
(The Wise Use of 'Intelligence': Firm development tactic hits its stride, by
Leigh Jones,04-12-2005,
http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1113222913512). It describes the use
of CI in law firms, explains sources, includes basic CI strategies used in
law firms, and cites a survey conducted by Brand Research Co, sponsored by
LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell and the Legal Marketing Association.

The fact that the CI activity is conducted within the context of marketing
rings a bell with me since I worked on a project for the marketing director
of a large law firm and we used some the techniques mentioned, in
particular, court records and other sources to track client representation
by competitors, their rates and the effectiveness of their service. The
purpose was to understand the firm's position compared to other firms using
CourtLink, CourtExpress and other sources.

Eliciting the Information You Want and Need
Sunday, June 5, 2005 8:00AM - 5:00PM
Information professionals are experts at building collections of secondary,
printed information. However, the intelligence process requires building
collections of primary sources too. This workshop will help participants
identify sources of human intelligence, develop an understanding of how to
evaluate sources for their usefulness and the skills needed to elicit
information from these sources. Here's a chance to learn from the best.
John has been serving the business intelligence community in various other
capacities since 1988. Previously, John Nolan spent 22 years in
intelligence collections and counterintelligence special operations in the
US, Asia, and Europe.
Speaker(s): Mr. John Nolan, III, Founder & President, Phoenix Consulting
Group
