Senior Reference Librarian
Position Summary:
Under minimal supervision, the Senior Reference Librarian is responsible
for providing legal and non-legal reference and research services to
attorneys and other staff. The Senior Reference Librarian coordinates
and supervises reference and interlibrary loan services; provides
instruction in the use of Library resources; participates in collection
development; and assists the Director of Library Services with various
aspects of Library administration, operations and service. The duties
for this position include, but are not limited to:
Job Functions:
* Provides reference and research services at all levels of
inquiry complexity, using print and online resources in an efficient,
cost-effective manner.
* Coordinates and supervises the reference, research and
interlibrary loan activities of other Library staff.
* Oversees and maintains the activity, content and statistics of
the Reference Database.
* Pro-actively provides and coordinates formal and informal
instruction to familiarize attorneys and staff in the use of library
resources; participates in the orientation of new employees.
* Bills time for research projects as appropriate.
* Acts as primary liaison with Lexis and Westlaw account
representatives.
* Maintains high level of research and online skills as well as
current awareness of related issues, trends and emerging information
technologies.
* Participates in collection development; evaluates new
products/current awareness tools; makes recommendations.
* Assists with the maintenance of the Library's web site.
* Participates in the review of cataloging and processing of
materials.
* Assists Director of Library Services in the training,
supervision and review of other Library staff members and with other
aspects of Library administration as assigned.
Qualifications:
* M.L.S. from an A.L.A.-accredited library school required; JD
from ABA-accredited institution preferred.
* 3-5 years of experience as a Reference Librarian in an academic
or private law library, with extensive knowledge of legal materials and
legal research techniques in all formats.
* Proven experience in business research preferred.
* Previous supervisory experience preferred.
* Expertise in searching Lexis, Westlaw, and the Internet
required.
* Proficiency with other legal and non-legal online resources
(such as Dialog, EDGAR databases, and docket services) and the ability
to instruct others in their use required.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to perform well in a fast-paced environment.
* Attention to detail, efficiency and thoroughness.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; must display
initiative and good judgment in decision-making and project management.
* Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
and consistently meet deadlines.
* Must be a team player who also works well independently.
* Motivated, with the ability to learn and develop new skills and
responsibilities.
* Must possess strong commitment to excellent client service.
* Proficiency in Windows applications and Microsoft Office.
* Working knowledge of html and web page development preferred.
Physical Requirements:
* Must have physical ability and dexterity to operate equipment
such as a computer, copy machine, telephone and fax, including the
physical ability to reach varying heights of shelving in order to
retrieve and shelve library materials; push loaded book carts; lift and
carry heavy boxes and library materials.
* Must have the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in
writing.
* Must have the ability to work in stressful conditions under time
deadlines.
