ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/HEAD OF REFERENCE
The State Library of Massachusetts is looking for a Head of Reference,
who will also be the Assistant Director. The position begins July 1,
2005.
Duties include: supervising the Reference, Legislative and Executive
Liaisons, ILL, Circulation, and Government Documents; working on the
Reference Desk; working closely with executive and legislative
personnel; participating in collection development, especially
electronic resources; and assisting the Director with Library policies,
budget, and personnel.
An ALA-accredited library master's degree, five years of supervisory
experience, and a knowledge of reference resources in at least one of
the following areas is required: law, government documents, or
legislative research. J.D. or extensive law library experience
preferred.
The State Library, located in the State House, provides research to the
executive and legislative branches and has an extensive law and public
policy collection. It is the center of the state document depository
system along with being a partial federal depository. It has a deep
collection in Massachusetts history. It is open to the public for
research. The Library has 16.4 FTEs, 6.5 of which are in Reference.
It is a management position. The salary range is $41,017.08 to
$83,442.53. Please note that the bottom of the range is set by statute
and has not been changed since 1986. The anticipated starting salary is
more than $55,000 but not near the top of the range.
