As was noted in earlier responses, Stella Liebeck was in fact a real
person who had fairly serious burns from McDonald's coffee. In addition
to the website in the previous responses, another place to find

The case has spawned a number of reports including some which purport to
be the Stella Awards These are supposedly awards given in the spirit of
Stella Liebeck for frivolous or odd suits. Many of these are hoaxes or
jokes. Then there are the "True Stella Awards" at
http://www.stellaawards.com/ which has real cases which are usually a
bit duller than the fake ones.
Many of the fake Stella Awards are a mixture of urban myth and other
tales including the microwaved cat story and cruise control RV story.

I did research on this last week when one of our law students wanted me
to help her find out about the story behind some of the fake Stella
Awards "cases" which she had received in an email. She assumed they
were true but just misreported. All ten of the "cases" turned out to
complete fakes.
