Bar Association partnerships

A few weeks ago I posed a query regarding whether any other law libraries had partnered with their local bar association to present pro bono or pro se programs. Though I did not receive very many replies, they were helpful.

Most librarians that replied were fellow county law librarians that provide space for clinics. The frequency of the clinics varies from once a year to almost weekly. Two libraries offer administrative support such as the taking of reservations for the clinics and scheduling pro se patron meetings with attorneys while another library highly recommends against it as it became overwhelming at their particular institution. Two libraries also mentioned that they house materials geared specifically for the clinics and/or pro se patrons. One of these libraries is otherwise unopen to the public and has limited circulation but does provide housing and circulation capabilities for materials purchased by the bar association to assist their attorneys doing pro bono work. All who replied noted the overwhelming popularity of the pro bono / pro se clinics / programs and some hope to or are currently in the process of expanding these services.

I hope this information helps others out there who are looking at similar partnerships.

Heartfelt thanks to all who took the time to reply and share their experiences with me!!

Sincerely,
Halle Mikyska
