For marriage and divorce records, every state and every county is different. Some have no records available online (e.g. Los Angeles County) while others have lots of records online (e.g. Clark County (Las Vegas, NV).

To discover if a specific state or county has records available free online, try seaching through the free public record metasite, searchsystems.net. They have an internal search engine, the Public Record Locator, where you can search by
the name of the state or county and the word "marriage" (or divorce) and you will then be able to link to the site.

Although you don't have access to Lexis, you can use lexisone.com and rent lexis public records by the day (or week, etc.). This is what I'd suggest since you can batch your searches and do them all in one day for one set price.

One last place to look for marriage and divorce records in rootsweb.com. Review their state pages and you might find some good links. For older records, some libraries or historical societies have created databases and placed them online
-- and they can often be found via rootsweb.

Good luck.
