I have a question from a non-law professor here that has me stumped. She
wants to know the first case in which a jury in the United States returned a
jury verdict of at least $1 million. She thought that it was some time in
the early 1960s. I found this article:

Schmit, Joan T., Insurance Versus Indemnification: An Argument for Stare
Decisis, 34 Defense L.J. 125, 130 (1985).

The number of million dollar judgments, for instance, has risen dramatically
over the past two decades. (19)

FN 19: According to the Insurance Information Institute, based on figures
supplied by Jury Verdict Research, Inc., the first million dollar verdict
was rendered in 1962. in 1980, ninety-four such verdicts were rendered.

This is all the information given. I have searched periodical indexes,
Westlaw, Lexis, etc. and have not been able to find anything. Does anyone
have any additional information on this case? I would be very grateful if
someone out there could help me. Thank you.
