I'll take Laura Bush seriously as a librarian when even one word comes out of her mouth indicating
that she objects to John Ashcroft's characterizations of librarians or his assaults on the right of
Americans to read without Big Brother checking up on them.
And, yes, actually, there is a rather large difference between spending the family fortune on
fripperies and being the chairman of a major charitable foundation.
Teresa Heinz Kerry is chairman of the Howard Heinz Endowment and the Heinz Family Philanthropies.
She previously worked (I believe as a translator) for the Trusteeship Council of the United Nations.
And in 1992, that notorious lefty Democratic President, George H. W. Bush, appointed her as part of
the State Department delegation representing US NGOs at the Earth Summit.
Now, for a long time between the Trusteeship Council job and becoming head of the Heinz Foundations,
she was primarily engaged in raising a family--but that's supposed to be a good thing, and it's what
Laura Bush has been doing ever since she last held a real job, too.

Heinz is one to talk about never having a real job...did not realize
spending the family fortune and marrying powerful politicians was a job...I
guess she calls it philanthropy.

Well, sure, I have the luxury of reading interviews like this at lunch
time. And even after seven years in the profession it still doesn't feel
like "going to work" every day. But I still thought I had a real job :^)

Teresa Heinz Kerry, 66, a philanthropist, sat in the double parlor of
her Washington town house to talk about her views of the role in the
White House she might assume. . . .
Q: You'd be different from Laura Bush?
A: Well, you know, I don't know Laura Bush. But she seems to be calm,
and she has a sparkle in her eye, which is good. But I don't know that
she's ever had a real job - I mean, since she's been grown up. So her
experience and her validation comes from important things, but different
things. And I'm older, and my validation of what I do and what I believe
and my experience is a little bit bigger - because I'm older, and I've
had different experiences. And it's not a criticism of her. It's just,
you know, what life is about.
