I have just published Basic Documents About The Treatment Of The Detainees
At Guantanamo And Abu Ghraib, a 344-page volume retailing for $30.00 that
includes the full text of six essential documents - the "Taguba Report," the
Geneva Conventions Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War and to the
Treatment of Civilian Persons in Time of War, and the historic decisions of
the U.S. Supreme Court in the detainee cases, Rasul v. Bush, Hamdi v.
Rumsfeld, and Rumsfeld v. Padilla. Full information is available at

My argument is that the issue that will determine the outcome of the global
"war" on terror is the ability (and inclination) of the United States
government to spread the mindset of modern democratic pluralism. Needless to
say, respect for the rule of law is of paramount importance in achieving
this goal. In this context, responsible citizens should feel an obligation
to familiarize themselves with the original documents that lay out the legal
and moral issues in detail.

If you think this argument makes sense and you agree that the content of
this book is a worthy subject for study, you can support my project (and the
rule of law!) by forwarding this note to e-mail and other online communities
in which you participate (please, follow list rules!) or by blogging about
it with a link to (again)
http://www.wfzimmerman.com/staticpages/index.php/20040719145035123.

You and your readers can also help me develop the 2d edition of Detainees,
which will include "best of the blogosphere" writing about the detainee
issues. Please post links to recommended blogs at
http://www.wfzimmerman.com/article.php?story=20040727154052434.

There are many reasons why this book should be a "responsibility virus" that
spreads wherever there are citizens of good will. Indeed, I'd like to see
every library on the planet have a copy of this book! To that end,
purchases of two or more copies are discounted 35% (buy one for yourself,
one for your local library), and $5.00 from the sale of each book will be
donated to the American Library Association (http://www.ala.org
<http://www.ala.org/> ) or Book Aid International (http://www.bookaid.org
<http://www.bookaid.org/> ).

Best regards,

W.F. Zimmerman
