On behalf of the Local Arrangements Committee for the 2004 American Society
for Legal History Annual Meeting I would like to post the following
announcement from Roy Mersky, the Local Arrangements chair.

Kumar Percy
-------------------------------------

The University of Texas School of Law will host the 2004 Annual Meeting of
the American Society for Legal History, October 28-31, 2004, in Austin,
Texas. As chair of the Local Arrangements Committee, and on behalf of the
American Society for Legal History and the University of Texas School of
Law, I extend a warm Texas welcome and invite you to come early and stay
late for the Society's 2004 annual meeting.

There are several scheduled events that would interest law librarains. The
Tarlton Law Library is planning an Open House in Tarlton Law Library's Rare
Books & Special Collections on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 28. Additionally
there will be a roundtable session Saturday morning, Oct. 30, on access to
lawyers' papers, an issue of interest to many of you. The session will be
chaired by Vicky Woeste of the American Bar Foundation. Panelists will
include business historian David Kirsch, Ray Solomon of the OAH/ASLH
Committee on Access to Lawyers' Papers, a legal ethics expert, and Tarlon's
Mike Widener representing the archives profession.

A highlight of the program will be the Plenary Lecture, a panel
presentation hosted by the University of Texas School of Law on Friday,
October 29. Douglas Laycock will moderate a panel discussion entitled "Law
and Religious Tolerance." The panelists will be Fr. Robert Drinan
(Georgetown University Law School), Baber Johansen (Ecole des Hautes Etudes
en Sciences Sociales, Paris), John Witte (Emory University), and Carol
Weisbrod (University of Connecticut Law School).

To learn more about the meeting and Austin generally look at the Local
Arrangements' Web page: <http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/aslh2004/welcome.html>

The page provides links to the conference hotels (the Driskill and the
Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin) and to other sites with helpful
information for visitors, including travel to Austin, ground
transportation, maps, weather, tourist attractions, museums, entertainment,
and research libraries. Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World and
offers a wealth of cultural and recreational activities.

Finally, there are two great reasons to BOOK YOUR ROOMS EARLY!

1. The Ninth Annual Texas Book Festival is set for October 28-31, 2004. See
the festival's Web site at <http://www.texasbookfestival.org/> for details.
First Lady Laura Bush is the Honorary Chair, and the 2004 featured authors
include Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan. The Texas Book Festival draws
thousands of visitors to Austin.

2. Halloween, on Sunday, October 31, is Austin's one-night version of Mardi
Gras. Last year 50,000 revelers filled 6th Street. If you like big parties,
bring a costume and stick around. At the Driskill Hotel, the festivities
will take place literally right outside the door, and the other conference
hotel, the Intercontinental Stephen F. Austin, is only a block away.
However, those heading for the airport on Sunday may want to plan
accordingly, to avoid the congestion. In either case, please consider
booking your room early.

Links to the conference hotels are provided on the Local Arrangements' Web
page, <http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/aslh2004/welcome.html>, along with
links to the ASLH annual meeting program and information on transportation,
weather, tourist attractions, museums, entertainment, and research libraries.

I hope that you can join us for the event.
