ALL-SIS Roundtable on Relations with CALR Vendors

From: Nancy McMurrer (mcmurrer@u.washington.edu)
Date: Tue Jun 29 2004 - 14:47:02 PDT

This Roundtable is a joint meeting of law librarians who are responsible
for the CALR products taught to law students and vendors who produce these
online products. Historically, the meeting had focused on relations with
the two vendors who had the largest ongoing presence in law schools:
LexisNexis and Westlaw. In recent years, as other vendors have produced
online services with special access for law students, these other vendors
have been invited and encouraged to attend as well. The Roundtable
discusses issues raised by vendors or librarians and attempts to work out
solutions that will serve the best interests of law students.

Who should attend? We encourage all librarians who deal with training of
these CALR products as well as those who manage relations with the
vendors to join us (however, we do not deal with the contracts themselves,
billing, pricing issues, or anything more properly addressed by CRIV). Any
vendors who have products with special programs for law students are
encouraged to attend. We need the full participation of all!

The meeting this year is on Monday, July 12, at 5:20-6:30 in
Sheraton-Beacon D. Here are the topics so far on our agenda:

*How can we best manage access for part time faculty and visiting
scholars?

*How can we encourage students to explore online resources other than the
ones in which they receive training in their first year?

*How can we best deal with the timing of vendor innovations and changes to
their products when they do not fit well with our academic schedules?

*How do we deal with access for non law students taking law courses?

*What is the librarian's and the vendors' proper roles in CALR training
for first year students?

*Web course products. What is a good balance between presenting
alternatives and recommending any of the vendor, other commercial, or
local school products?

*How do vendors deactivate student IDs or passwords? How often is it done?
What role do/should librarians play in purging student or other user
passwords/IDs?

If you (librarians and vendors) have other concerns that you would like to
raise, please let me know, or just come and share them with everyone at
the meeting. The discussion is always lively, and you are bound to learn
something that will be useful in your job!

Nancy
