This is an excellent decision. Congratulations to all involved.

Subject: Second Hot Topic Added to the Boston Meeting!
In April, the Social Responsibilities SIS submitted a program proposal
for the Hot Topic session at the AALL 2004 Annual Meeting in Boston. The
proposals were reviewed by the Annual Meeting Program Committee, chaired
this year by Gail Warren. With the recent developments in Massachusetts,
California, Oregon, New York, New Mexico and Canada concerning same-sex
marriage, we wanted to offer a program that helped educate all of us on
the status of the legal issues and that utilized local experts. Although
our program was not initially selected, with the support and "behind the
scenes" work of Gail Warren, AALL President Janis Johnston, Susan Fox
and Pam Reisinger of AALL headquarters, our program was added as the
second Hot Topic! A heartfelt thanks to all involved, from the initial
search for speakers, to finding a room big enough for this program at
the Meeting.
The program Same-Sex Marriage: the Legal Issues is now included within
the "Educational Programs and Workshops" Listing at AALLNET
(http://www.aallnet.org/database/meeting_annual_programs.asp?meetingcode
=AM2004&link
<http://www.aallnet.org/database/meeting_annual_programs.asp?meetingcode
=AM2004&link> = ) as program "G-7" to be held in Room 210 of the Hynes
Convention Center on Tuesday July 13th 4-5pm.
We have three speakers packed into one hour. Bennett Klein, of Gay &
Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, will discuss litigation strategies
surrounding the Goodridge case and public education efforts.
Constitutional law scholar Libby Adler of Northeastern University School
of Law will discuss the pending state and federal constitutional
amendments defining marriage as one man and one woman. Professor Joseph
Singer of Harvard Law School will discuss the conflicts of law angle and
the role of the Defense of Marriage Act and Full Faith and Credit
Clause.
This is a lot to cover in one hour, but we wanted to address the topics
that patrons and legal researchers are asking us at our
reference/research desks in every type of library. Please spread the
word about this program. We have a room that accommodates 300 people and
hope to see it full.
Alison Alifano, Chair, SR-SIS
