Two of our professors are working on an empirical project about the
choice of form of New York law firms. We need to find a source for
data on the changes in law firm composition over the years 1994-1997.
We cannot find copies of the NALP Directories for 1994, 1995, 1996 or
1997 (except archive copies that cannot leave the NALP D.C. office) and
we are also looking for a more precise/accurate source for that
statistical information (see below for more details). Any suggestions?
Please respond off list to dnixon@email.unc.edu Thank you.

As you probably know, law firms have many
choices, including general partnerships, professional corporations,
limited liability companies, and limited liability partnerships.
We are now looking for the rate of growth of the firms in the sample
since 1994. The rate of growth can be measured different ways.
Ideally, we would like to know the year-to-year change in the number of
partners in each firm. As a second-best, we could look at the year-to-
year change in the total number of attorneys.
Thus far, for each firm, from the Martindale-Hubbell website, we have
gathered information on the total number of attorneys (as of 2003).
The Martindale-Hubbell books -- which the library has back to 1994 --
report less information than the Martindale-Hubbell website. And,
unfortunately, the books do not report the number of lawyers in each
firm. Of course, we don't have website information back to 1994.
NALP is another potential source. NALP breaks down each firm's lawyers
into categories (i.e., partners, associates, non-equity partners,
etc.). Unfortunately, the NALP breakdowns are by office, not
firmwide. For example, from NALP, we could get the change in the
number of partners in the New York City office of Sullivan & Cromwell,
but not the change in the number of Sullivan partners firmwide. This
is especially problematic for firms with international offices.
If any of you have suggestions or ideas on how to find the rate of
growth information, please let me know.
