Subject: AALL Dues Increase

I've been sweating over my budget for fiscal year 2004-05. Like many of you I have groaned and screamed over price increases and distribution practices of the publishers. Difficult decisions have been made regarding cancellations and changes in our services while still providing a viable service to our community.

So imagine my frustration when the dues invoice for AALL arrives with an 11.04% increase - the second year in a row! The very organization that provides the venue for our venting, works toward improving our relationships with our vendors, and even provides programs that aim to assist us with some of these budget woes.

I know I'm taking a risk with this posting and I expect a few to respond critically. But do not misunderstand my reason for venting. I value this organization. I recognize the cost of supporting AALL and the many excellent programs has risen. However, during this time when libraries are canceling resources and in some cases, shutting the door, perhaps our own organization could assist the members by limiting or postponing dues increases. I agreed with placing the control of the dues in the hands of the Board of Directors, but now I'm questioning....

I know it can be argued that we can't afford NOT to belong to AALL. However, the reality is that given the choice between updating a resource used by library users, or providing a much needed and deserved pay raise for a valuable employee, or paying the dues for staff members to belong to AALL... well.. what would you do?

Also, whatever happened to the possibility of reduced dues if one foregoes receipt of Spectrum and Law Library Journal? My library does not need the multiple copies received by each member.

My reference librarian will forward any comments to me. But if you would like to engage in a conversation OR just feel compelled to tell me I'm totally wrong directly you can email me at sborbon@co.fresno.ca.us <mailto:sborbon@co.fresno.ca.us>
