It's advertising, not a "gift" in the usual social sense. Appreciate it if
it's useful to you, or enjoyable, but don't forget that Lexis' purpose in
sending it is to keep their name in front of our eyes. If the advertising
"gift" becomes a topic of discussion, even mocking discussion, that serves
their purpose, and the people who made the decision to spend the money will
not be displeased.
The only possible downside for them is if the chosen "gift" offends
substantial numbers of people--which may possibly have happened with the
roach clip/document holder. Even then, they're better off knowing that so
that they can avoid repeating the mistake.
(Of course, "it's just advertising" may not apply to something personally
chosen by your own local rep. Whether or not the cost came out of the Lexis
marketing budget, your local reps may well feel personally invested in
something they personally chose to give to their own clients.)

Com'on guys, let's be grateful. Lexis doesn't have to give us anything, a
gift is a gift and we should be appreciative! Have we forgotten our manners?

Hey, I can use roach clips. I hate it when I finally get all my cockroaches
gathered up, only to have them scatter because I don't have a clip to hold
them together.
So what was this cesktop roach & floating pill gift. I never saw one.

Do you remember the flurry of emails in December* after several list members
received from the Lexis/Nexis Librarian Relations Group what became known as
the "desktop roach clip & floating pill" gift? . . . Well, just wait until
the "Library Week" gifts hit folks' desks!
Imagine our surprise today upon receiving from Lexis a small yellow watering
can ... along with a bag-o-dirt and unidentified seeds suspiciously labeled
"GROW YOUR OWN"! Apparently, it will take 14 to 21 days before we know
precisely what we are harvesting!
Cheers,
Martha
* My favorite post in December on this topic was by Mary Rumsey: "If a
human being gives me a gift, I say thank you, but if a multinational
corporation sends me (and thousands of others) a logo-encrusted,
mass-produced, deductible-as-a-business-expense gift that looks like a roach
clip, I make fun of it."
