We also do a big celebration for NLW. We usually have three games on M, T & W. This year I went with an Olympic theme, "Go for the Gold @ your Library," given the Summer's fun in Athens. I purchased USA Olympic pins to send out. Anyone caught wearing their pin will get a pick at the grab bag (items from vendors etc..). The games include an Olympic trivia quiz, a name the Mascot game and an Olympic logo test. The partners give me Giant's baseball tickets for prizes each year. Everyone who completes a game gets their name put in for the ticket drawing. This insures participation! I also send out bags of candy on the first day with the Library Newsletter/Calendar of events. On Friday, the librarians bring in a huge number of homemade cookies for our Cookie Extravaganza where we feed them and have the prize drawings. I also bought plastic "gold" medals to send out to all. I put a jar full of candy or gumballs on the counter and folks are encouraged to "guess the number." Most everyone puts in a guess - it doesn't take very long and the prize is the jar and its contents!

I send out a daily email with the days events and reminders to get their game sheets in. I usually incorporate quotes from famous folk about libraries. We Celebrate Thursday, Int'l Special Librarian's Day, with a Popcorn party. Popcorn happens to be a favorite of mine and most folks can eat it- I get several flavors along with plain for the calorie conscious. The library, copy rooms and kitchens are decorated with balloons and banners.

In the past, we've done a baseball theme when NLW coincided with Opening Day, a RED/READ theme (everyone in the office got into it and started wearing red for the week), and a CWC History week - where we played games and trivia regarding the firm's members and history. We've asked folks to bring in pictures of their pets and had everyone guess who's was who's pet. VERY FUN! I usually do a word search puzzle, sometimes with all the atty/staff names hidden or one on the theme. The staff have started looking forward to the week and begin asking me around February about NLW! Oh, the pressure! :)

A friend down the street is also doing an Olympic theme. She is having a Library Triathlon where staff/members compete in a discus throw (old CDs into a trash can), a book truck race, and a shelving contest. She has other firm folks playing the Olympic theme on Kazoos for the opening ceremony! Very clever!

Anyway, have great fun with this. We get lots of kudos for putting this on every year and focus is on the library for an entire week. I've had attorneys call/email me while away on business (one even in trial) upset that they were missing the fun!

FYI - this year, NLW coincides with Staff Appreciation/Administrative Workers/Secretary's Week, so make sure your events don't get upstaged by HR events (or you upstage them and get into a competition for attendees).

The vendors come in and do a lunch or other demo/update of their products and give away chotchkys, too.

Essentially, we throw a week long party, continue to do our regular tasks and are worn out by week's end. This will be my sixth year - I start thinking about NLW in January given the time it takes to plan the week.

Happy NLW!

Subject: National Library Week April 18-24, 2004

Is anyone doing any activities for National Library Week besides getting vendors in who will provide goodies and freebies. I think this is a great opportunity to promote the library's visibility. I am thinking along the lines on activities to get people away from their desktop access and to remind them of what the physical collection is about and also remind them that the library and its space is neutral territory in the organization. Possibilities I think of are research trivia contests. Or maybe, who can provide the most fun cases--the example that comes to mind is the Ozark Hillibilly case which is on the spine of a Words and Phrases volume.

Any thoughts and input are appreciated.
