From: Lisa Blackwell (lblackwell@asl.edu)
Date: Wed Apr 07 2004 - 13:03:27 PDT

Since many librarians teach legal writing, I am posting this to this list:

Colleagues:

I write to you as Chair of the Thomas F. Blackwell Memorial Award
Committee. The Boards of the Legal Writing Institute (LWI) and the
Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) jointly created this Award
to honor the life of our colleague, Tom Blackwell. Award Committee members
include myself (University of Dayton); Lisa Blackwell (Appalachian); Mary
Lawrence (University of Oregon); Jo Anne Durako ( Georgetown); Amy Sloan
(University of Baltimore); Steve Johansen (Lewis & Clark); Pam Lysaght
(Detroit-Mercy).

In our inaugural year, the Award went to Richard K. Neumann of Hofstra
University, and last year Pam Lysaght of Detroit-Mercy received it. This
year we will be creating a plaque, listing the Award winners, to reside
at Appalachian.

We are presently seeking nominations for the 2004 Award and ask that you
send them, in confidence to me, the Chair of the Committee, by close of
business [5:00 pm EST] on Friday, May 7, 2004. The Committee requests
that the nomination materials support as fully as possible the listed
criteria as well as any other information the nominating person believes
would help the Committee in its selection process.

If you are seeking to re-nominate a candidate you previously nominated,
please note that the Committee does not retain nominations from earlier
years. Therefore, we ask that you submit a new nomination with supporting
materials.

NOTE: Submit nominations in confidence to me at
Rebecca.Cochran@notes.udayton.edu or in paper by fax or U.S. mail.
Do NOT simply hit the reply button to submit a nomination. It
will reach me, but quite a few others as well.

As soon as possible after close of nominations and Committee discussion, we
will announce the Award winner.

Reprinted below are the Award's Criteria and Process and the Joint
Resolution creating the Award. Members of the LWI and ALWD governing
boards and Award Committee members are not eligible. I have listed those
Board members based on information currently posted on the organization
websites.

I am honored to continue serving as Chair of this Committee and look
forward to receiving your nominations.
