Thanks to everyone who responded to my question
If you have discarded or removed the physical volumes (not just stop updating them) of the Federal Reporter and Federal Supplement can you tell me what your long term feed back has been. There would be a lot of initial complaining and shock but if its been awhile since they were discarded are they still sorely missed?
Several people asked me to summarize the responses I received. Basically people report that the outcry over the removal of these volumes was not that bad. But many people who removed them from their collection, did so as part of a physical relocation of the library.
* Out of 17 responses, 7 said the volumes were removed due to a relocation of some type.
* Some mentioned the resistance they encountered was due to fears of cost, that electronic charges to clients would increase. This was overcome in many ways: arguing cost of shelf space, use of space for other items more costly or not available online, or just explaining and going over how the Wexis contract actually worked and how/if costs would be effected.
* Also as I have been watching who uses ours and in reading the responses I find that the usage and complaints don't always break on age or computer savvy lines.
* Many said that the discussion of removal made it sound like there was going to be a big storm over the issue but the storm failed to materialize.
* Several people especially those that removed them years ago mentioned great efforts to show the attorneys how to quickly get the case online and including in the dropping notice a list of "how to..." classes
Responses
"discarded of all Federal Reporter sets three years ago...a little bit of complaining at the time...rarely get complaints now"
"many years of...[agonizing discussion] on issue" few complaints after removal
"..fought to keep them, but when the deed was done...there were very few complaints...[and they] seem to have adjusted"
"removed a several years ago...no complaints" This was said in many ways. My sense is that many of you who responded removed them 3 to 5 years ago
"There was not as much comment as I expected in the beginning, (we tried to tell everyone about it early & often), but oddly enough, 2+ years later we still get attorneys coming in asking where the cases are."
"shock and much complaining [at the beginning]...now that it's been a few months most are...happier with electronic"
