Hi Law-Libbers:

For those who are interested in the responses to my query about advance releases of judicial opinions, it seems other courts provide similar services. The responses are as follows:

1. For MA: This links to a free Westlaw site from the judiciary web site.
http://massreports.com/slipops/

2. Just a note of explanation re the Connecticut practice of issuing advance opinions. Connecticut publishes it own reports, both for the Supreme Court and the Appellate Court. We have a large printing press operation which also publishes the Connecticut Law Journal which contains the "slip opinions" of our two appellate courts and selected trial court opinions, among other legal materials. The slip opinions are the official opinions of the courts, prior to their being published in a bound volume. When our court decided to put their opinions on the web, the court made it very clear that the web opinions are not the official opinions. Our Reporter of Judicial Decision's office provides a syllabus and a procedural history for each opinion. This material is in the Connecticut Law Reporter and in the bound volumes, but it is missing from the advance release web opinions. Connecticut never used West to publish its caselaw. There is West's Connecticut Reporter, but this is merely a compilation of cases ta
ken from the Atlantic Reporter. Our official reports are the Connecticut Reports and the Connecticut Appellate Reports, which are published by the Commission on Official Legal Publications.

3. There is a listserv that provides daily emails with links to opinions issued that day by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Also, I believe Wisconsin Court of Appeals and Supreme Court opinions are posted daily to their web site.

4. The Utah Appellate courts provide advance release of their opinions at
http://www.utcourts.gov/opinions/. Also, an e-mail subscription for
these opinions is available at http://www.utcourts.gov/opinions/subscribe/.

5. Actually, I believe that's what the 3d Cir. does with its opinions because you'll often see an amended opinion or errata sheet issued a month or two after the original opinion is issued.

Law-Libbers:

I ran across an opinion with a publication date of March 23, 2004. I thought it was a typo and investigated further. It turns out that the court issuing the opinion (Connecticut) provides advance releases of their opinions:

So now I'm curious. Are there any other courts that do this? I figure this is an anomaly but wanted to doublecheck. Reply off list and I will summarize if it turns out that there are other courts with a similar practice.

Thanks.
