A word of caution when purchasing materials online at ABANet.org

Good Friday afternoon to all. Before I forget, I just wanted to relay an e-commerce experience I had at abanet.org.

On March 4, I went to the ABA website and searched their bookstore section for the title I needed to order for my attorney. Once I located the title, I placed the order, carefully entering my credit card information. I then printed out a confirmation of my order to place in my files.

About two weeks later, I contacted the ABA to see if they could track the order. After all, I had an order confirmation number. But, when I spoke with the ABA publications office and recited my order number, I was told that ABA had no such order in their system. I was asked how I placed the order, which credit or purchasing card was used. They still had no record. When I asked them how I could stop the order or see what may have happened, they stated that probably the purchase card portion of their site malfunctioned.

All that I could do was to place the order again and then call the bank handling our purchase card. I placed the order via telephone with the ABA and I called the bank. Fortunately, the bank had no record of my prior purchase.

So, next time you think you have purchased an item for your collection, and even if you have filed a copy of the order confirmation in your files, remember this story.
