CRIVGram - 3/15/04
Recent listserv discussions centered around West's announcement about an
expansion of the Civil Rights volumes in West's Federal Practice Digest 4th.
West has asked CRIV to post the following information.
"West appreciates the opportunity to respond to the CRIV regarding the
recent shipment of new Civil Rights volumes of West's Federal Practice
Digest 4th. West has revised sections of the West Key Number System for the
topic Civil Rights, to more accurately reflect the current state of the law.
The revised Civil Rights section has been expanded from 347 key numbers to
777 key numbers. The new categories reflect litigation involving the areas
of disabilities, age and sex discrimination, retaliatory conduct, sexual
harassment, housing, prisoners, and affirmative action. The revisions
required the reclassification of over 300,000 paragraphs.
Currently, 20 volumes of the West Federal Practice Digest 4th contain Civil
Rights headnotes. Through the revisions, these volumes will be replaced with
27 new Civil Rights volumes. Replacing this section is necessary because
there is not a book-to-book correlation between the content of the current
edition and the new volumes. West recently shipped all 27 new Civil Rights
volumes. There will be no West Federal Practice Digest 4th bound volume
shipments for the months of March-June of 2004.
West understands our customers' concerns regarding this shipment. As we have
communicated in the past, it is not possible to provide exact shipping
schedules or pricing information. However, we estimate that total shipments
for the West Federal Practice Digest 4th will remain in line with previous
years, and that the year-over-year price increase for this product will be
less than last year.
If customers have further questions or comments, please contact Customer
Service at 800-328-4880."
CRIV thanks Anne Ellis of West Group for providing this response.
