Michelle's certainly got the right idea. The cost of Federal Practice
Digest is $4,980.50 to buy new. The supplements (pocket parts and revised
vols.) cost $4,747.00 in 2003, up from $4,142.00 in 2002. Buying a new set
every 13 months puts you over the cost divide. Buying a new set every two
years saves your library $4,513.50 every two-year cycle (assuming supp.
costs remain the same, which, of course, they won't). Here's the track
record of the past few years:
Federal Practice Digest 4th
1998: $1,968.50
1999: $2,234.00
2000: $2,547.00
2001: $3,564.75
2002: $4,142.00
2003: $4,747.00
That's a 141% increase over five years, with 1998 as the base year.
Canceling and re-purchasing this set makes prefect sense under these
circumstances, particularly for the library which would otherwise have to
drop the subscription entirely.
