court briefs and petitions, indictment and pedigree in NY

Hi Everyone:

A faculty member at Niagara University asked me this question:

"I am looking for the records (briefs and petitions, indictment and pedigree) for court cases of death penalty commutations in NY State from 1890-1960. I do NOT need the court opinions for the cases from Westlaw or Lexus/Nexis."

We have gotten some of these documents on microfilm, which the faculty member then prints. But this is an enormous amount of printing, because the briefs, petitions, etc. are over 100 pages many times. She said is going to need 900 cases, eventually.

So my question to you is twofold:

(1) Is there a one-stop source in New York State for this material?

(2) Is there a cost effective way to obtain copies (for examples, microfiche copies)?

Thank you for your time.

David Schoen
