Ephedra can kill by doing what it is supposed to
Reuters, 12.30.03, 3:17 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Ephedra, sold widely as a diet supplement, can
cause serious health effects by doing just what it is supposed to do --
rev up the body's metabolism.
The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it was moving to ban
ephedra, also known as ma huang, because it can cause a heart attack and
stroke.
FDA Commissioner Dr. Mark McClellan said dieters may hope to lose weight
and improve their health by taking the supplements -- but in fact, he
said, ephedra causes many of the problems weight loss is supposed to
correct.
"If you're resolving to get in better shape in 2004, ephedra is not the
answer," McClellan told a news conference.
"Ephedra raises your blood pressure and stresses your system. These
effects on the body have been conclusively linked to serious heart
problems, strokes and death," he added.
"These are exactly the health problems that weight loss is supposed to
prevent, but ephedra appears to cause them. There are far better safer
ways to get in better shape."

Package-delivery giant FedEx (FDX ) jumped after it agreed to acquire the
privately held Kinko's copy center chain for $2.4 billion. FedEx
anticipates the deal won't have a material impact on fiscal 2004 results,
but that it will be accretive to earnings in fiscal 2005.
