Federal Reporters

I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my request regarding whether or not they have cancelled the Federal Reporters and Federal Supplements. Several people asked that I summarize the responses. Here goes:

Federal Reporters & Federal Supplements<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Of the 40 responses I received, 14 firms had cancelled subscriptions to both. Reasons for the cancellations were primarily cost and space. Several who cancelled indicated that there was some initial resistance to the idea, but that most attorneys accepted the decision when they realized the amount of money that would be saved. Access to the decisions via Lexis and Westlaw--and especially to the decision in pdf--made the transition easier.

Seven firms are considering canceling both titles. Again, the reasons appear to be primarily cost and space.

Two of the firms had cancelled the Federal Supplement but were still receiving the Federal Reporters.

Six firms had cancelled the subscriptions to most of their offices but still maintained at least one print subscription.

Eleven firms continue to subscribe to the two titles. There were several reasons for this decision. Some of the veteran attorneys were reluctant to part with the print. Headnotes and judicial obituaries are available only in the print volumes and not on Westlaw. There is still heavy use of the print volumes by attorneys. One of these firms has placed most of their Federal Supplement volumes in storage and keeps only one year in the library.

Several librarians mentioned that they had either cancelled the regional reporters and kept the federal titles. Others had cancelled the federal titles and maintained the regional reporters. One had also cancelled the Federal Register.
