Too many people responded to thank you all individually. But thanks for
so many replies. By about 35 to 3, most people said the library paid
for these desk copies.

Some designated "office copies" in the budget. Some libraries assigned
attorneys' desk copies to different practice groups to help determine
the total costs of the practice group. The IRCs got assigned to tax
group, Federal Rules to Litigation Group. Some said that it was a
general ledger item, separate from the library.

A few libraries who did buy these for attorneys had them pay out of the
corporate accounts, seminar accounts, CLE accounts. Only one other
firm, like our firm gives them an allowance of a certain amount but also
found it a bookkeeping hassle.

One firm bought a library copy and one for the head of each practice
group.

One firm had the library shareholder approve each deskbook purchase.

The firms buying these desk copies for their attorneys specified the
books remained with the firm when the attorney left.

One firm sent around a list of six or seven titles they could choose
from; some tried to limit expenditures by getting tax attorneys one set
of Codes and Regs per year, getting the local state rules, and
Dahlstrom's Civil Rules Booklets instead of West's Federal Civil
Judicial Procedure and Rules.

One firm gave each new attorney a "package" of titles.

One firm allowed each attorney to buy two deskbooks a year, but conceded
some found a way around that. There was a one-time only third deskbook
in their third year.
